Peeling Shadows

On the 30th of October 2020, history was made as Peeling Shadows was the first live play to debut at the Market Foundation since the Level 5 Lockdown was implemented. It would then be selected for the Standard Bank Presents… Main Programme at the National Arts Festival in 2021 and streamed for a global audience at the Satyrianas Online Festival in São Paulo, Brazil, that same year. Peeling Shadows would then make history again as being the first Kwasha! Production to be nominated and win the Naledi Award for Best Incubator/Tertiary Production at the Naledi Awards for 2020/2021 in review.
Now, four years later, the cutting edge production returns to the Ramolao Makhene Theatre to immerse audiences into their cartoon & theatre aesthetics by making use of projection, live illustration, shadow theatre, mime, caricature & music. “Peeling Shadows” follows the story of the infamous Pamela Jack, a disgraced detective on a quest for redemption after fumbling Johannesburg’s most notorious corruption case, causing a six year long investigation regarding the notorious Gumede Family to go cold.
After yet another day of humiliation at the Police Department, Pamela encounters a mysterious young girl, Boang, wandering the streets alone. Little does Pamela know, Boang holds the key she needs to crack the Gumede case, and will inadvertently show Pamela a whole new paranormal world that lays behind the Gumede family crimes. This fresh new murder mystery is a must see for all theatregoers.
Peeling Shadows is a family show inspired by the pervasive South African Urban Legends that reside in our collective consciousness, exploring the lives and importance of essential workers through myths and how often we allow those same legends and myths to prevent us from connecting with each other. The cast tell an unforgettable story on redemption, classism, justice, myth & perception. Peeling Shadows aims to open minds, wash eyes and help us all see each other for who we really are, to teach an important lesson to younger generations on corruption, gentrification & justice.
