The Market Theatre Laboratory Presents Theatre of Excess, a Theatre Think Tank Event

23 September 2021 @ 19h00

The Theatre Think Tank is a project of the Market Theatre Laboratory that seeks to widen conversations on the contemporary art practices and processes of artists in/from South Africa.

For the second event, “Theatre of Excess”, we host four powerhouse artists.

Each artist’s work as performer-playwright-producer puts them in multiple roles. For “The theatre of Excess”, the four artists will explore their solo productions, and how they surpass a single form.

Buhle Ngaba, Billy Langa, MoMo Matsunyane, and Tony Miyambo perform and think through the creation of each of their pioneering pieces of solo theatre.

From Swan Song, to Tswalo, through Unlearn, and Kafka’s Ape, these masterful playwright-performers, produce an access point to their own processes.

With them, we explore the possible excess of theatre; and how a work can live its own life.

Meet the Co- Producer of our open class , Motlatso Seepe, 1st year student at the Market Lab.

Here’s what she had to say about her role as producer:

“Listen!!! Coming from a performance perspective, you know that there’s work that has to happen before audiences ever get to see a show, but you kinda take for granted the amount of work that goes on even before the performers get their brief.

This process has reacquainted me with all that, and I’m glad I had a lot of admin experience coming into it because it came in super handy - coordinating multiple creative heads is lit!!

Above all, I’m just grateful for this learning curve and learning where some of my strengths can apply, outside being an artist.”

Meet the Director of our open class , Mncedisi Hadebe , 2nd year student at the Market Lab.

Here’s what he had to say about his role as director:

“My role in the process is to direct the opening, middle and closing of the show, which will take the audience through a journey of celebrating Old and New African work. Since it is Heritage month what we are focusing on more is to help celebrate our history and tell our stories, the best way we can.”

_Is dancing your passion? Do you want to brush up on those moves?

Well get those dancing shoes on and get ready to sweat! This course, lead by legendary dancer and choreographer Joyce Hopane, will introduce students to the world of Footwork Fusion Dance.

_Students meet over 12 classes on a Saturday afternoon (2pm – 4pm), from 25th September 2021 to 11 December 2021._

_You don’t have to be a seasoned dancer to apply for this one, anyone with the passion to move and the dedication to learn is welcome_
