Tseleng loses her parents at an early age, and is raised at her uncle’s home. Her aunt (’Malitaba) ill-treats her, while constantly being reminded that she is a useless orphan, Tseleng withstands all the hardships that many people in the village are witness to.

Ultimately she is married off to a deaf ‘lelahleha’(Sootho), whose identity is not known (as the story continues we learn that he was a First World War survivor, who was in the process of being a clergy when they were attached).
