AUGUST AT THE MARKET THEATRE LABORATORY

The Market Theatre Laboratory hosts an exciting August programme at the Ramoloa Makhene Theatre – spotlighting female performers and encouraging the development of new productions and stories. Here’s what you can expect:

 8, 9, 10 & 11 August: AFROPOCOLYPSE  

The Markt Theatre Laboratory is proud to present “Afropocalypse,” a new South African work, performed by First Year Lab students and directed by Daniel Buckland.

This captivating performance will transport audiences to a post-apocalyptic South African wasteland, where a community of traveling players and storytellers navigate a desolate landscape through the power of narrative.”Afropocalypse,” follows a troupe of intrepid storytellers as they peddle tales of the past, recounting stories that have survived and evolved through the cataclysm that reshaped society.

17 & 18 August: DLALA WENA SATURDAY SHOWCASES

The Market Lab is excited to announce a return of the Saturday Showcases, Dlala Wena! Many moons ago, theatre practitioners from all around Johannesburg would gather at the Market Lab on a Saturday and present their work-in-progress to an open audience for constructive criticism and artistic input. Our second Saturday Showcase is scheduled over two days – where creatives between the ages of 16 – 35 will present an extract of their new creative project. You’re invited to take part as the audience.

Showcase runs from 10h00 – 16h00 on each day with hour slots, join us for one, two, or all slots.

Attendance is free!

22 – 25 August: UNLEARN-ING STILL

A revised and new take on Unlearn returns to our stage! Unlearn-ing Still, written & performed by MoMo Matsunyane and directed by Khutjo Green, is about a young lady called Angel Mojapelo who suffers from depression and anxiety. She uses standup comedy as her escape from her parents failed marriage and unfulfilled career choices. The play intends to highlight the effects of suffering from mental illness as well as interrogate the female body as a site of violence. The play also seeks to find ways of unlearning inherited toxic behaviour.

26 August: ZAF’INGANE CONCERT by LISO THE MUSICIAN

Liso the Musician brings a different flair to her known musical style which she has coined ‘Ancestral Jazz to what now she has discovered as Worship Jazz’. Her concert is a transition from her previous album (ZAF’INGANE) to a new one titled SIKHANYISELWE, named after her late daughter. She is now joined by individual talented creative artists to create ZAF’INGANE, a theatrical, story-driven and spiritual performance. This performance calls on individuals to fix their eyes to God in every situation they encounter in life.
Liso The Musician is undoubtedly one of the greatest talents to emerge out of Khayelitsha in recent years. Her musical brilliance is evident from the very first note.

30 August: WOMEN WHO KILL

Award winning Comedian, Wazi M Kunene brings back Women Who Kill. A standup comedy show starring dope seasoned woman comedians who are killing it! This time featuring the Awarding winning Khanyisa Bunu, the multi-talented Stella Dlangalala and the hilarious Waylene Beukes. Don’t miss out.
