The Market Theatre Laboratory presents a celebration of Chris Hani’s life. Inspired by the hit American musical Alexander Hamilton, the Hani story is told through the contemporary song form of hip hop rap and ballad. Through this fresh form, Chris Hani’s message for the youth is voiced. In an energetic hour-long show filled with song and dance, we grapple with the gap Hani left us with and are inspired with how we can use his legacy to move forward. The play has been given the nod by struggle stalwarts such as Ronnie Kasrils. It especially appeals to a young audience. It is an educational theatrical experience that informs while it inspires.
Fifteen first year Market Theatre Laboratory students together with director Leila Henriques and assistant director Linda Tshabalala researched Chris Hani’s life through newspaper articles, the Hani biography and the internet. Using Hani’s life’s timeline, an intense one-month rehearsal process took place, creating the arc of the play and finding the appropriate song form to express it in. Everything in the play is based on truth. Song, dance pieces and scenes were created through improvisation, but there was no fabrication or poetic license. The cast were very strict in honouring the truth.
